The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the oldest concert-giving organisations in the world, and the second oldest in Britain.

The origins of its concert series date back to the formation of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society, which administers it, in 1840 - the same year that the first Cunard passenger liner set sail for America.

The Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, as it was called then, acquired the title 'Royal' in 1957. The RLPS is distinctive in that it is the only orchestral society in Great Britain to own and operate its own concert venue, the magnificent Philharmonic Hall (see picture).

In 1989 the RLPS and Orchestra received an Honorary Fellowship from the Liverpool John Moores University and in 1991 were the first organisation to be granted the freedom of the City of Liverpool. A further honour of Meritorious Service was granted by the City of Liverpool in 1997.

RLPO Live

As a recording orchestra the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra has a varied and critically acclaimed discography, enjoying a long and fruitful relationship with many major recording companies, including EMI and Virgin Classics. Most excitingly, however, in an ambitious new venture, the Orchestra launched its own brand new recording label, RLPO LIVE, in December 1998. The initiative came from the musicians themselves and each recording, made with the in-house recording company, Merseyside Sound Recordings, takes a typical RLPO concert recorded live into your home. The first recording, produced from a concert in the autumn of 1998, features Petr Altrichter and includes Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. Other recordings now available in this unique series include Cathedral Classics featuring Bach, Handel, Haydn, Berlioz and Vaughan Williams conducted by Ian Tracey, and Carl Davis Summer Pops Album. In addition to a Christmas Carol CD and a Christmas Celebration with Willard White, the sixth and latest RLPO LIVE release features Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique and Poulenc's Les Biches, conducted by RLPO Principal Guest Conductor Junichi Hirokami.

The recording, editing and management of the whole production is done by members of the RLPO. Our recording team comprises Producer Michael Ogonovsky and Sound Engineer David A. Pigott, alias Merseyside Sound Recordings who are both members of the RLPO horn section. Jonathan Small, the RLPO's Principal Oboist, acts as Executive Producer.

RLPO Live won rapid recognition at the Merseyside Oscars in July 1999, where the record company won the Liverpool Echo Award for Classical Music. RLPO Live also offers a complete service as a recording company, from planning your album, through to managing the whole design and production process. You can contact us by e-mail, through this website. RLPO Live's ground-breaking way of producing classical recordings confirms the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra's reputation for innovation streamlining the economics of classical recording for the new markets of the twenty-first century.
