Farinelli ( 1705 - 1782) was a vocal phenomenon of his time - technically the most accomplished singer of his days with a vocal range of more than three octaves, described by Handel as a 'singing machine'! Arno Raunig has a similar vocal range. He started his career as a soloist in the Vienna Boys' Choir. This collection of songs provides a show case for Raunig's exceptional talent. A beautiful disc.

Luigi CHERUBINI ~ "MÉDÉE"

Opera in three acts

First performed at the Theatre Feydeau, Paris, March 13, 1797

First complete recording of the original French commemorating the 200th anniversary of Luigi Cherubini’s dramatic masterpiece, with Opera Quodtannis’ cast & period-instrument orchestra based on the Brian Morgan production.

Libretto by Francois-Benoit Hoffmann • Music by Luigi Cherubini

Luigi Cerubini’s (1760-1842) seminal opera, Médée, was first performed in Paris on March 13th, 1797, only six years after Mozart’s Die Zauberflote, more than a decade before Beethoven’s Fidelio and a generation prior to the stage works of Berlioz, Weber, Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini. The work was originally conceived as an opéra-comique, in French, and with spoken dialogue between musical numbers to conform to the specification of the Théatre Feydeau, where Médée was premiered. It is in this form, for the first time on recording (based on Brian Morgan’s heavily stylised production for Opera Quotannis at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Centre, in New York City in March 1997, to commemorate the bicentennial of the opera), that Cerubini’s complete creation was finally restored and given full representation.

Cherubini’s Médée had, of course, been held in high esteem for many years as a complex, compelling stage work, famously noted for the difficulties of its role, the beauties of its orchestration and, most importantly for breaking the confines of eighteenth-century opera into the dramatic, highly charged emotionalism of the nineteenth century

Gian Carlo MENOTTI

THE CONSUL

FIRST COMPLETE RECORDING

Berkshire Opera Company

Camerata New York Orchestra • Joel Revzen - Conductor

Includes libretto and programme notes.

The Consul, Menotti's finest lyric composition, was first performed in the Spring of 1950 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre and was awarded both Pulitzer Prize for Music and Drama Critics Awards. The Consul is a Kafka-like drama of political intrigue, desperate love and mind numbing frustration - all the ingredients necessary for a successful opera.. The Iron Curtain may have fallen but oppression and fascist politics have not disappeared from our world and this work speaks to many issues still sadly familiar at the end of this century.

Douglas MOORE ~ THE BALLAD OF BABY DOE

First New Recording in nearly 40 years -

from the stage where the opera was premiered

Cast & orchestra of CENTRAL CITY OPERA • John Moriarty, conductor

FIRST ALL-DIGITAL RECORDING

Like many American operas, Douglas Moore’s The Ballad of Baby Doe contains both local interest and the anecdotal, but it has other qualities which have lifted it above the commonplace and which have won it a place in the repertoire and in opera history. Using the story of Tabors as a springboard, the opera deals with universal truths and values. It is a story of undying love (Baby’s), suffocating pride (Agusta’s) and hubris punished by the gods (Horace’s). It was the genius of Moore to create a musical score, touching in its simplicity, which provides colour, a feeling of period and soaring lyricism
