Peter Olufsen, President of Classico
We chose to record the new Carl Nielsen Editions because it is our aim to get as closely as possible to the composers scores. However, Authenticity is seen as a means to an end rather than a goal in its own right. Douglas Bostock and the RLPO breathe new life into Nielsens music. The recordings sing out with an affirmation of life in Nielsens sense and a spontaneity which gives the impression of the music being composed as one listens to it
The new Carl Nielsen Edition is being produced as a co-operation between the Royal Danish Library and Wilhelm Hansen music publishers to eradicate many errors which have accumulated over the years This authenticity is further enhanced in the Classico recordings by careful attention to many instructions in the original scores, and by reference to historic performances. The seating of the strings, for example, is as Nielsen himself expected and would have been used to.
The consultant for the Classico Nielsen series is Knud Ketting, the foremost Danish authority on Carl Nielsen. He has also written the fascinating texts to be found in the CD booklets. He is currently working on a new, major biography of the composer.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic has an earthy depth to its sound, warm and passionate yet with brilliance and verve - the orchestra is ideally suited to Nielsens symphonies in all their facets. The musicians display great dedication to the music and demonstrate real involvement in its constant ebb and flow.
Eddie Thomas, RLPS Artistic Executive
The RLPO is an orchestra with a great recording history to its name. This international collaboration with the independent Danish CD label Classico is a timely continuation. The RLPO has a a long tradition of Nielsen performances, whilst Douglas Bostock represents a new generation of Nielsen conductors. His deep affinity with Nielsens music, dedication to the scores and strong rapport with the RLPO make an exciting partnership.

REVIEWS ALREADY IN FOR THE FIRST VOLUME:
"...A finely paced account with plenty of breadth and nobility, and no lack of fire...I was particularly impressed by the keenness of response Bostock gets from his players."
BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE DECEMBER 1999
"Virile performances of early and late Nielsen. Douglas Bostock conducts a reliable account of one of the centurys great symphonies [No.5]"
THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH NOVEMBER 7 1999
"Bostocks is definitely a clear front runner amongst modern versions. I await further releases in this series with bated breath. In the meantime this shattering 5th will keep me going till the end of the century."
