Luigi CHERUBINI ~ "MÉDÉE"

Opera in three acts

First performed at the Theatre Feydeau, Paris, March 13, 1797

First complete recording of the original French commemorating the 200th anniversary of Luigi Cherubini’s dramatic masterpiece, with Opera Quodtannis’ cast & period-instrument orchestra based on the Brian Morgan production.

Libretto by Francois-Benoit Hoffmann • Music by Luigi Cherubini

Luigi Cerubini’s (1760-1842) seminal opera, Médée, was first performed in Paris on March 13th, 1797, only six years after Mozart’s Die Zauberflote, more than a decade before Beethoven’s Fidelio and a generation prior to the stage works of Berlioz, Weber, Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini. The work was originally conceived as an opéra-comique, in French, and with spoken dialogue between musical numbers to conform to the specification of the Théatre Feydeau, where Médée was premiered. It is in this form, for the first time on recording (based on Brian Morgan’s heavily stylised production for Opera Quotannis at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Centre, in New York City in March 1997, to commemorate the bicentennial of the opera), that Cerubini’s complete creation was finally restored and given full representation.

Cherubini’s Médée had, of course, been held in high esteem for many years as a complex, compelling stage work, famously noted for the difficulties of its role, the beauties of its orchestration and, most importantly for breaking the confines of eighteenth-century opera into the dramatic, highly charged emotionalism of the nineteenth century

Franz Joseph HAYDN

HAYDN ~ CREATION - ORIGINAL 1797 ENGLISH TEXT

Brenda Harris, soprano • Carl Halvorson, tenor • John Cheek, bass • Fairfield County Chorale

Amor Artis Orchestra – PERIOD INSTRUMENTS • Johannes Somary, conductor

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), a devout man, took its composition with utmost reverence: "I was never so religious as during the composition of The Creation" he observed to a friend. "Daily I fell on my knees and asked God for strength." With characteristic humility, he gave full credit for this sublime masterpiece to the Almighty. On hearing a public performance of The Creation in 1808, the enfeebled master was quite overcome: At the glorious C major illumination of the works "and there was light" he exclaimed, "It was not I, but a Power above who created that!" Haydn spent almost two years, 1797 and 1798 working on The Creation. When asked why he was taking so long, he replied "Because I intend it to last for a long time."

Victor HERBERT

VICTOR HERBERT ~ EILEEN

ROMANTIC COMIC OPERA IN THREE ACTS (1917)

The first recording of the 1917 romantic comic opera, set in 19th century Ireland, in a reconstruction & realization by Quade Winter and James Stuart – from live performances at the Ohio Light Opera Company, in a two-CD set produced by John Ostendorf

Ohio Light Opera-Resident Professional Company of the College of Wooster • James Stuart, artistic director

EILEEN On January 1st, 1917 at Cleveland’s Colonial Theatre, Victor Herbert conducted the matinee and evening performances of his new operetta Hearts of Erin, which, following the premiere was re-titled Eileen. Hearts of Erin arrived at a time in America when live theatre and the movies were competing for the public’s attention. After a tour, Eileen opened at New York’s Schubert Theatre on March 19th, with the composer again conducting. The New York Times reviewer observed that the score was in Herbert’s "best vein", its Irish flavour contributing to much of its charm. Eileen ran for 54 performances until the end of the 1917 Broadway season. A tour began in Hartford in September and ended in Drayton on January 16th, 1918, when a fire in the Victoria Theatre destroyed scenery, costumes and instruments.

THE CONSUL

FIRST COMPLETE RECORDING

Berkshire Opera Company

Camerata New York Orchestra • Joel Revzen - Conductor

Includes libretto and programme notes.

The Consul, Menotti's finest lyric composition, was first performed in the Spring of 1950 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre and was awarded both Pulitzer Prize for Music and Drama Critics Awards. The Consul is a Kafka-like drama of political intrigue, desperate love and mind numbing frustration - all the ingredients necessary for a successful opera.. The Iron Curtain may have fallen but oppression and fascist politics have not disappeared from our world and this work speaks to many issues still sadly familiar at the end of this century.

Gian Carlo Menotti’s delightful Space-Age comic opera. John Demain leads Madison Opera’s Spring 1998 production in the work’s first recording produced by Joihn Ostendorf. The story begins with the arrival of unknown flying objects from another planet and creatures identified so far, only as Globolinks. It turns out that Globolinks are frightened of music – the moral of the story appears to be that if we keep music in our hearts we have nothing to fear. A delightful romp through Menotti’s music.

Douglas MOORE ~ THE BALLAD OF BABY DOE

First New Recording in nearly 40 years -

from the stage where the opera was premiered

Cast & orchestra of CENTRAL CITY OPERA • John Moriarty, conductor

FIRST ALL-DIGITAL RECORDING

Like many American operas, Douglas Moore’s The Ballad of Baby Doe contains both local interest and the anecdotal, but it has other qualities which have lifted it above the commonplace and which have won it a place in the repertoire and in opera history. Using the story of Tabors as a springboard, the opera deals with universal truths and values. It is a story of undying love (Baby’s), suffocating pride (Agusta’s) and hubris punished by the gods (Horace’s). It was the genius of Moore to create a musical score, touching in its simplicity, which provides colour, a feeling of period and soaring lyricism

Alec WILDER

ALEC WILDER (1907-1980)

Of all the musical genres, none if more distinct than the one held by Alec Wilder – an unconventional cocktail of jazz, spoken word and American popular song. Few composers have the ability to express themselves so prolifically in forms ranging from brass quintets to operas and ballets. As a composer, Wilder was likened to many of the more notables of the time, including Gershwin, and Villa-Lobos. Born on February 16th, 1907, Alexander Lafayette Chew Wilder studied music only briefly. As a composer, he was largely self taught. In the early years of his career he lived in NYC where he made the legendary Algonoquin Hotel his home. It was Frank Sinatra who was responsible for bringing Wilder’s music to a wider and more diverse audience. As a fan and supporter, he engineered a recording of Wilder’s solo wind works with strings with Columbia in 1945. The two became life-long friends and Sinatra went to perform many of Wilder’s popular songs. It was Wilder’s intimacy with both classical and jazz musicians as well as notable singers that made him such an interesting composer. His career involved such names as Stan Getz, Cab Calloway, Johnny Mercer and others and he was greatly admired by Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett and Mabel Mercer. Not least of all was Wilder’s love of children. "A Child’s Introduction to the Orchestra," as well as the song book "Lullabies and Night Songs," illustrated by Maurice Sendak attest to the versatility of his talent.

Few composers in the modern age, apart from Bernstein perhaps, have proved to be so articulate in such a wide range of styles as Wilder.

Works on this cd include pieces dedicated to Zoot Sims, Mitch Miller and Julius Baker. The five works which Frank Sinatra conducted in 1946

Humbert Lucarelli, oboe • Eugenia Zukerman, flute • Gary Louie, tenor saxophone • Kenneth Pasmanick, bassoon

The Manhattan Chamber Orchestra • Richard Auldon Clark, conductor

HORNSMOKE

Music of Peter Schickele performed by The Chestnut Brass Company and the Composer

"Hornsmoke" (A Horse Opera for Brass Quintet)

Peter Schickele, composer, musician, author, satirist is a prolific composer having written over 100 works for symphony orchestras, choral groups, chamber ensembles, voice, the cinema and television. Schickele is acknowledged as one of the great satirists of the 20th Century and the music on this CD bears testimony to that title. "Hornsmoke" (A Horse Opera for Brass Quintet) is an ‘opera’ without voice in which the characters play to each other rather than sing. It has all the characters and characteristics of all the ‘Westerns’ we have ever seen – tongue in cheek of course!

Brass Calendar

The dates on this calendar reflect American events but New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Halloween are all dates which ‘travel’ well and anyone who has filled in their own income tax form will recognise the mounting panic and confusion which ‘Income tax Day’ conveys.

This is a great CD – lots of fun, lively and just what we need to brighten up the dark days of January.

CHARLES TOMLINSON GRIFFES

GODDESS OF THE MOON

Exotic Chamber Music based on Japanese, Druid and Indian Themes,

Perspectives Ensemble

The ensemble comprises:Celeste è Harp è Cello è Bass è Tom-tom è Horn è Clarinet è Oboe è Flute Viola è Clarinet è Piano è Violin

Three Sketches on Indian Themes • Sonata For Piano • The Kairn of Koridwen • Three Japanese Melodies ~ First recordings

When Griffes was born in New York in 1884 Richard Wagner had just died, Brahms was alive and well in Vienna, R Strauss was 20 years old, Schoenberg was only 2,Debussy was 22 and Scriabin a 12 year old youth in Russia. This puts Griffe into a musical context. He may well have been influenced by these composers but, having been briefly influenced by the German Romantic tradition he moved toward Impressionism and then found a congenial source of material in the music of the Orient as well as the poetry of the Scottish-Celtic writer Fiona MacLeod and finally into the realm of absolute music, exhibiting a stark, dissonant style. (from the CD booklet)

Griffes’ music is wholly accessible. The soaring violin in the second movement of his Three Sketches on Indian Themes is reminiscent of Vaughan Williams’ ‘Lark Ascending’. It is hauntingly beautiful with little hint of the dissonant style of the absolute music of his later period. The third movement of this piece has a primitive energy – again hauntingly beautiful tunes are to be found in this movement. It is well worth spending time listening to this music – the reward is finding something that you will go back to again and again.
